The freelancing industry is growing nowadays. Many "newbies" are shifting from a manufacturing, medical or corporate field into the freelancing business. As you journey in this new field, the first question you must answer is how to choose your freelancing niche. It is very important to identify a freelancing niche because, from here, you will know how to establish and brand yourself as a freelancer.

TIPS ON CHOOSING YOUR FREELANCING NICHE

FVA Business Consultancy, one of the leading business consultancies in the Philippines that offer online courses to freelancers, shares some useful tips on how to choose your freelancing niche.

1. START WITH THE SKILLS THAT YOU ALREADY KNOW

This tip is useful if you are a student who just graduated from school or university or a mother who wants to venture into the online business for the first time and do not have any work experience yet. You can always start with the skills that you have developed in school or tasks that you are skilled to begin with. Examples of these are research, data entry, transcription, preparation of reports using power point, data management using excel, data visualization using charts or graphs and report writing using Microsoft word or Google docs. You can choose a niche in general virtual assistance and offer administrative support to entrepreneurs.

2. CHOOSE A NICHE THAT IS RELATED TO YOUR WORK EXPERIENCE

As a newbie, you can always start with skills from your previous work experience(s) as your freelancing niche. Your years of experiences in an offline setting, from which you have developed several excellent skills, can be a good start in establishing yourself in the online world.

For an instance, if you are working in a corporate field as a secretary, an executive assistant or as an admin staff, you can choose general virtual assistant as your freelancing niche. You can offer virtual support in administrative tasks such as data entry, transcription, research, data analysis and visualization, appointment setting, calendar management, email management and project management. Also, if you are in the field of accountancy or real estate, you can establish yourself as a virtual bookkeeper or financial manager and a real estate virtual assistant, respectively. Moreover, if you are from the medical field, you can choose medical transcription, being a healthcare management instructor or a content writer in a medical website blog as your niche.

3. START WITH THE NICHE THAT YOU DEVELOPED DURING TRAINING

If you are taking online courses in freelancing, then, you can learn several freelancing skills which you can offer to your future clients. For an instance, if you are taking freelancing course from FVA Academy then you can develop several skills which you can choose as your freelancing niche. Examples of skills you can develop through online courses are general virtual assistance, social media management and marketing, website creation and management, lead generation, and email marketing.

4. CHOOSE A NICHE THAT YOU CAN OFFER AT YOUR FULLEST POTENTIAL

If you already have a skill that you are talented with or you have developed throughout the years, which you can offer at your best capabilities, then you can choose that skill as your freelancing niche. This is a niche that you can confidently offer to your clients and achieve best results since this is a talent or skill that you have gained expertise on for the past years. For an instance, you are a talented artist, graphic designer, photographer, video editor, content writer, an expert product developer or an efficient executive assistant.

5. CHOOSE A NICHE THAT YOU REALLY ENJOY WORKING

This is the most advisable type of freelancing niche to choose. This is the skill that you are expert on and, at the same time, love doing. It is the niche that will bring out the best in you and give you satisfaction and fulfillment. You should always aim to establish yourself in this type of freelancing niche. This is the ultimate goal of a freelancer.

Niches from tips number one to three are niches that a new freelancer can always start with. These are the skills that you are already equipped with. These are the skills that you have developed either from school, from your previous works or during your training. If you are a new freelancer that could only establish yourself by choosing niches from tips one to three, always remember that it doesn't mean you will be stuck on those niches only. Remember that you can always reestablish (or "rebrand") yourself as a freelancer to a niche o niches which you became expert on.

You can always grow from the basic type of niche (the one that you know) to the niche that you really love doing. It could be the very niche that you choose from the start of your freelancing career or it could be a niche from which you have reestablished yourself as a freelancer. Whatever type of freelancing niche you choose, always see to it that you will end up doing the niche that you really love doing. That is the only way that you could feel satisfied and fulfilled with your freelancing career. Make that as your ultimate goal!
